And they are risking their lives to leave. Next week's 'WORLD'S UNTOLD STORIES' tracks the journey of Rohingya refugees, fleeing western Myanmar where they are denied citizenship, freedom of movement, property rights, are harassed and forced into labor. But while members of this Muslim minority are choosing to escape by sea, they are just as unwelcome in the places they wash up; Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. CNN's Dan Rivers travels to Southern Thailand where boatloads of Rohingya are found and detained by Thai authorities. He hears refugees' tales of beatings and mistreatment at the hands of the Thai military, and uncovers exclusive photos of Rohingya in boats being pulled back out to sea far off Thailand and cut adrift. Rivers talks exclusively to the Thai Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, who for the first time admits there were "some instances" when boats of Rohingya were towed out and abandoned at sea. Abhisit promises to bring those responsible to account, although he insists they were given food and water, and denied Thai officials physically abused Rohingya migrants. Rivers also travels to Indonesia's Aceh province where another boatload of refugees wash up and are taken into custody by Indonesian police. |
